ABOUT BOYNTON

Our History

In 2023, Boynton Chapel Methodist Church was designated as a Registered Texas Historic ​Landmark. We are excited to share that our building was designed by John S. Chase, the first ​licensed African American architect in the State of Texas. Since our founding in 1880, Boynton ​has always accepted the challenge to enrich the lives of others to “Empower the Family, ​Strengthen the Church, and Transform the Community not just in Third Ward but across the ​nation.

It is 2024, and we at Boynton Chapel Methodist Church are ecstatic to ​observe our 144 th year as a beacon of light and hope in the Greater ​Historic Third Ward community. Join us in celebrating this grand ​milestone by supporting our “Raise the Bar” Charitable Dinner on ​Thursday, October 10, 2024, at The Emancipation Park Cultural Center of ​Houston. We have planned and you should anticipate a spirited, ​entertaining, and beneficial event with Briana Conner, ABC News 13 ​Reporter as our Emcee and performances from National Recording ​Saxophonist Lloyd Hughes and Houston’s 2024 MLK Jr. Oratory ​Competition 5 th Grade Student Montoia Murray.




As a sponsor, you will assist in making the occasion beneficial in raising funds to​​continue our mission to empower individuals and families in our community.​During ​dinner, we will share our inspiring programs and services and celebrate​the rich ​history and architectural significance of our beloved church. In 2023, ​Boynton Chapel ​Methodist Church was designated as a Recorded Texas ​Historic Landmark. We are ​excited to share that our building was designed by ​John S. Chase, the first licensed ​African American architect in the State of ​Texas. In 2022, Boynton was awarded a ​$90,000 grant from Partners for Sacred Places to fund repairs to our historic ​building. Proceeds from this event will go toward required matching funds to help us ​access this critical funding to support the longevity of the building. Since our ​founding in 1880, Boynton has always accepted the challenge ​to enrich the lives of ​others to “Empower the Family, Strengthen the Church, ​and Transform the Community ​not just in Third Ward but across the nation.
